Today is our last day in Croatia. After packing up the apartment, we drove up to the Klis Fortress. Along with awesome views out over the city of Split, the kids also got to try out their archery skills. Our family does not have HBO…so we have never watched Game of Thrones, but parts of it were filmed at this fortress.
We then visited the old city of Trogir, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The whole city (small town really) is built edge-to-edge on a tiny island. The old stone buildings (a mixture of architecture from the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Venetians) are mostly unchanged over the past 1000+ years however modern stores and restaurants have moved into the spaces. This island town is full of palaces, churches, towers, and a fortress. Unfortunately, all of Europe is having a large heat wave, and today in Trogir was 44°C (which is 111°F for those of us who don’t understand the metric system). Needless to say, we were happy for the shade of the narrow alleys but didn’t stay too long before retreating to the air-conditioned comfort of the rental car.
We grabbed an early dinner on the way to the airport to return the rental car. The airport in Split was very organized, modern, and largely automated. It is a tiny (only 5 gates) airport but was very nice, clean, and modern. Interestingly, they have no jetway bridges…rather when it is time for your flight they just herd the group of passengers out onto the tarmac and up a portable staircase.
The flight to Bergen, Norway was an uneventful three hours however our flight did not arrive until after midnight so by the time we got to our Airbnb it was pretty late (though the sky was not fully dark…we are WAY north a the moment). Now we are off on the final leg of this summer’s adventure!
